Uggiano La Chiesa is in the eastern Salento in the outback of Otranto and it includes the town of Casamessella too. The municipality adheres to the national Association cities of bread and oil. Its origins are uncertain, the human settlements date back to the prehistoric time as the presence of megalithic monuments testify, such as dolmen and menhir. The Byzantine cripta of Sant'Elena, or San Solomo, whose name comes from a possible deformation of the Greek word "Eleusa", the title of the Virgin; Tower of the Angel, an ancient watchtower , which was declared socio-cultural heritage, are suggested. Uggiano is famous for the Tables of S. Joseph prepared by the devoted families during the feast of S. Joseph.
