Nardò (Neritum o Neretum in latin, Nerìton in greek, Naretòn in messapico) is the second centre for population and territorial extension. It lies on a plain at south-west from Lecce and it includes a part of the Ionic coast. The city has very old origins and witnesses of every age, from the prehistory onwards. The Basilica Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (XII century) founded on a Basilian church; the Church of San Domenico (XVI century), built for the Dominicans; the cripta of Sant'Antonio Abate (XII century) with the remains of a Byzantine decoration; Palazzo dell'Università (XVI century) in baroque style.
