Collemeto is a hamlet of the town of Galatina, in the province of Lecce. Located at 8km north-west from the capital city, is located slightly raised above the surrounding land. Collemeto was probably built in the Byzantine era, as ecclesiastical center with the construction of an abbey of Benedictine monks around the seventh century AD; at a later period, the abbey became the home of the Basilian monks. The first settlements are represented by farms built by farmers who lived in close contact with the monks.
