Church of San Vito

Set in the east countryside of the cemetery, near one of the entrances of the ancient Forest of Calimera, it dates back to the 16th century. At the center of the nave, a limestone megalith of pre-Christian era protrudes from the floor, and it's called the Sacred Rock of St. Vito, with a hole in the middle (men-an-tol, or holed stone). Tradition has it that on Easter people goes through the hole to purify themselves. This custom goes back to the rites of fertility. The rock shows at the top the remains of the fresco depicting Saint Vito Martyr.
