Carmine Church (Gallipoli)
The Church of the Carmine, the seat of the Confraternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel and of Mercy, is a church of the old town of Gallipoli. Designed by Vito Donato from Galatone, was rebuilt between 1836 and 1838.
The simple façade has a single access portal with a broken tympanum.
The interior, with a nave square covered by a vault supported by four solid columns, ends with a presbytery, about 5m deep, flanked by a wooden choir for the brothers. On the back wall of the main altar you can admire an altarpiece depicting the scene of the Deposition from the Cross of Jesus, traditionally attributed to Antonio Ribera.
