Shrine of the Holy Cross of Mercy

Located in Galatone in the province of Lecce, is the city's main Baroque monument, and one of the greatest examples of 17th century architecture in the province.

The current temple was consecrated in 1711, and elevated to sanctuary in 1796 by Pope Pius VI.
The magnificent baroque façade is inspired by the Jesuit architecture and is divided into three orders.
The interior is made ​​up of the presbytery, the transept and the nave; in the latter there are three chapels which host the altars dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, St Blaise, Our Lady of Good Council, the Holy Family and St. Peter. The hall is dominated by the magnificent stone altar, decorated with spiral columns and bas-reliefs depicting the cardinal virtues.
