Castro's Castle

The castle is located in the municipality of Castro Castro in the province of Lecce, Apulia.
The oldest building of the current Aragonese castle dates back to the 12th or 13th century and was built on the ruins of the Byzantine fortress. In the second half of the 13th century, Carlo I of Angiò defines it a fort of strategic importance for the realm's defense. The castle is considered to be of national importance and is one of the most functional, combining natural defenses and military architecture. In 1480, following the sacking of Otranto, the city was invaded by the Turks and the castle was partially destroyed.
The castle has a rectangular plan with four corner towers of varying size and shape and equipped of an entrance protected by a moat and drawbridge, now removed.
