Church of Santa Teresa

The church of Santa Teresa is a Baroque church in the historic center of Lecce. Together with the adjoining convent of the Discalced Carmelites, was founded in 1620.

The church was built by Giuseppe Zimbalo and rises in the area occupied by two ancient chapels dedicated to San Nicola and St. Venera. It was completed in 1630.
After the suppression of the order in 1807, the monastery became the seat of the Carabinieri barracks (1831) and later a school. The church was instead turned into a tobacco warehouse. In 1831 was established the confraternity of SS. Crucified and the Gonfalone, who have also worked on its restoration.
