Church of Sant'Angelo

The church of Sant'Angelo, also known as Saint Mary of Constantinople, is one of the oldest churches in Lecce. Built in 1061 by the Augustinians, was rebuilt in the XIV century. In 1663 the poor structural condition led to a complete revision of the complex.
The facade, unfinished at the top, presents a breakdown into five parts at the bottom, through double pilaster strips and columns placed against the center, with grooved shafts decorated by little angels and friezes between the capitals. The intermediate spaces are occupied by framed empty niches. The central portal is crowned by a curvilinear tympanum, above which is placed a statue of the Virgin and Child, flanked by two angels.
The interior features a Latin cross plan.
